Falling Leaves, Beautiful Colors, and Gutters . . . OH MY!

Fall is a beautiful time of year, isn’t it? The cooler weather, the beautiful colored leaves . . . little did we know that those beautiful leaves can cause havoc on our roof, flower gardens, foundation, gutters, and more! It is not often we think about our gutters. It rains, the gutters work, we are good! But then, they don’t work . . . it is raining, and the gutters are overflowing. Who wants to get the ladder out, climb it in the pouring rain, and clean out the gutters?

When leaves and other debris (seeds, insects, twigs, branches etc.) clog your gutters to where the water is flooding over the sides, you can end up with your shingles rotting. Rotting shingles means roof leaks over time. Roof leaks means expensive roof repairs or replacement. Additionally, overflowing water can damage the fascia, which is the board that runs behind your gutters. Lastly, when gutters are clogged and full of water, the weight of the water alone can damage the brackets that hold the gutter to the structure, and they can fall to the ground.

Once the flooding gutter water reaches the ground, you have more problems. Most importantly, it can end up freezing, which causes it to expand, and can flood your basement or crawlspace and generate cracks in your foundation. More expenses and aggravation.

Did we mention that gutters clogged with pine needles, twigs, seeds, and small branches are great places for insects and furry critters to make their nest? Yikes!
